Signal #005 | Credits, Tokens, and the Bill You Can't Explain

Software used to cost $20 a month. Now it costs whatever your prompts decide.

The frontier model economy runs on credits, opaque little units that sit between you and the actual cost of inference. Claude, OpenAI, Gemini for text. Kling, Seedance, HappyHorse for video. Your usage becomes tokens, tokens become credits, credits become dollars. Three layers of abstraction. Zero visibility into what you actually paid for.

The pitch is convenience. Wrappers or model aggregator services like Higgsfield, Weavy, LTX Studio give you a slicker UI, multi-model routing and one invoice. The price is the user experience and explainability. Generate a couple of 5-second video clips and you can burn a week's allowance without knowing why. Was it the resolution? The reasoning steps? An expensive fallback model triggered behind the curtain? The dashboard rarely says. This is the grey area. Customers now carry the forecasting risk that used to live with vendors. SaaS was a flat lease. AI is a metered taxi where the meter is hidden in the trunk.

Two consequences follow.

First, an adoption gap. Frontier models are the best teachers we've ever had, but cost anxiety pushes curious users back to the cheap tier, exactly where a learner shouldn't live. The people who could benefit most from the best model are the ones who can least afford to experiment with it.

Second, the rise of context engineering as a real craft. Prompt design isn't about getting better answers anymore. It's about getting the same answer for half the credits. Compress the context. Cache the system prompt. Feed with accurate references. Route the easy turns to a smaller model. The people who learn this early will look like wizards. They're just reading the meter.

The fix isn't more credits. It's invoices that read like itemized receipts, model, tokens in, tokens out, computing cost, and why. Until then, every AI bill is a leap of faith resting on prompting skills.

If this signal mattered, forward it to one person who'd benefit.
